Recently on Hacker News I came across a “Ask HN” where the poster asked if there were any job boards and age-friendly companies out there. The replies are hilarious with the top post sharing two anecdotes of older men dying their hair and dressing more hip. The poster then goes on to finish with it’s not your age that will limit you, but your apparent age. If you are old, but look like a younger/fresher version of yourself, you do well.

Facebook Sticks It To the Engineers

Hacker News has featured several articles over the last few days about Facebook encouraging remote work and setting salaries to match cost of living to the areas the engineers stay in. The top comments are full of posters that aren’t happy about this. They’re losing out the opportunity to perform geo-arbitrage by living in a cheap location while enjoying high Silicon Valley salaries. I laughed at the mental gymnastics used to justify this arbitrage.

Smart People Are Going Into Law and Finance

I recently read on Hacker News that Elon Musk has stated “Too many smart people go into finance and law”. His main focus was that people prefer to use their talents for financial engineering instead of putting in “an honest day’s living”. I work as an engineer in a manufacturing company and I’ll say companies in no way value people that put in “an honest day’s living”. Corporations view engineers and manufacturing folks as expenses and try their best to eliminate us.
